SoMad Studio is proud to present “Throned,” an exhibition by Tiffany Smith on Thursday, September 12th from 7-9pm.
“Throned” takes inspiration from traditions of West African portrait photography and the cultural practice of using the wicker throne peacock chair at social gatherings and celebrations in black and brown communities. The language of these vernacular photographs is applied to unique environments created by building temporary sets or habitats for her subjects to inhabit, brimming with bright colors, overlapping patterns and plant life. Using a wicker throne chair as a central prop on which to create empowered portraits of her subjects, photographer Tiffany Smith has created works at SoMad Studio during a month-long residency. Her set has doubled as an interactive installation that has brought together a wider community of individuals. She will display works produced during her residency at SoMad Studio, open for one night.
